Keeping Organic Produce Affordable

The high price of organic produce is enough to make it difficult for many people to believe they can truly improve their diets by exclusively buying organic. For those who do not have access to affordable organic produce, you don't have to always buy organic. Here are some suggestions for the healthiest produce selections available at your local market.

The following products are considered the cleanest, safest items to buy from conventional growers.

-- Asparagus
-- Avocados
-- Bananas
-- Broccoli
-- Cauliflower
-- Kiwi
-- Mangos
-- Onions
-- Papaya
-- Pineapples
-- Peas (sweet)

When possible, the following foods should be purchased from organic growers. When tested by consumer groups, the conventionally grown items on the list below often tested high in pesticide residue and/or were more likely to be genetically modified.

-- Apples
-- Bell peppers
-- Celery
-- Cherries
-- Imported grapes
-- Nectarines
-- Peaches
-- Pears
-- Potatoes
-- Red raspberries
-- Spinach
-- Strawberries
-- Winter squash
-- Green beans
-- Potatoes
-- Corn
-- Tomatoes
-- Cantaloupe
-- Cucumbers
