Fun Little Do-Dahs

My readers send me many fun emails, many with interesting FYIs and some with handy little do-dahs. I feel the holiday season is a good time to share this one with you! Thanks, all, for sharing with others the tips that enhance your personal lives.

Reheating Pizza

Heat up leftover pizza in a non-stick skillet on top of the stove. Set heat to medium-low and heat until warm; this keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro-pizza this holiday season.

Get Rid of Ants

Put small piles of cornmeal or flour where you see ants. They will eat it and take it "home" to the anthill, but they can't digest it, so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it has rained, but this works, and you don't have the worry about your pets or small children being harmed by nasty pesticides and toxic chemicals!

Foggy Windshield

Do you hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub them with the eraser! This works better than a cloth.

Reopening Envelope

If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Like magic, it unseals very easily.

Better Frosting Tip

When you buy a container of frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double its amount. You can now frost more cakes/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar/calories per serving.

Good-bye Fruit Flies

To get rid of those pesky fruit flies, fill a small glass with 1/2" (inch) apple cider vinegar plus 2-drops dish washing liquid, and mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone bye-bye!

Baby Powder at the Beach

Keep a small bottle of baby powder in your beach bag. When you're ready to leave the beach, sprinkle yourself and the kids with the baby powder, and sand will slide right off your skin.

Reheating Refrigerated Bread

To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that have been refrigerated, place them in the microwave with a cup of water (next to them). The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster

Newspaper Your Weeds Away

When you put in new plants and work nutrients into your soil, wet a newspaper and put it in layers around the plant,s overlapping the newspaper as you go along. Cover each layer with mulch and forget about your weeds. Weeds get through some gardening plastics, but they will not get through wet newspapers.

Broken Glass

Use a dry cotton ball to pick up little broken glass pieces of glass -- the fibers catch the ones you can't see!

No More Mosquitoes

Place a dryer sheet in your pocket to keep the mosquitoes away. Yes, I know that some dryer sheets have questionable chemicals in them, but inside your pocket, dryer sheets are less harmful to your health than most insect sprays, and are less harmful than the West Nile virus! Sometimes you must prioritize your poisons; especially when children are concerned.

Squirrel Away

To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle your plants and/or soil with cayenne pepper. The cayenne doesn't harm the plant and the squirrels won't come near it.

Thank You Notes

If you ever throw someone a bridal/baby shower, buy a pack of thank-you-cards for the guest of honor. During the party, pass out the envelopes and have everyone put their address on one. When the bride/new mom sends the thank you notes, they're already addressed!

Stolen Bicycle

When you purchase a new bike or replace old grips, place your picture or your child's picture inside the handle bar grips before placing the grips on. If the bike is stolen and later recovered, remove the grip and there is your proof of who owns the bike.

Measuring Cups

Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill the cup with hot water. Pour out the hot water, but don't dry the cup. Then add your ingredients, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out of the cup.

Easier Deviled Eggs

Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock baggie. Seal and mash until the yolks are broken up. Add the remainder of your ingredients, reseal, keep mashing, mixing thoroughly. Cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze the mixture into the cooked egg white. Just throw the baggie away when done - easy clean up.

Flexible Vacuum

Add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift-wrap roll to your vacuum cleaner tube to get something out of a heat register or under the fridge. The roll can be bent or flattened to get into narrow openings.

Reducing Static Cling

Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your garment slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. The same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place the pin in a seam in the slacks and -- viola -- static is gone.

Hair Conditioner

Use hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth - and conditioned!
