Young children need a nurturing diet for the development of their physical and emotional bodies. They need to learn the difference between natural foods and chemically manmade foods. Parents and teachers should provide an environment that offers the healthy alternatives for positive social behavior and normal development. Try these tips at school or at home to help your child:
1. Start feeding your child healthy foods right from the beginning, after he or she is weaned from (breast) milk. A child raised on whole foods will not acquire the same taste for sweets and other fake junk foods, as one who has been raised on them.
2. Observe what you child is eating and drinking. Keep a log to determine which particular foods are triggering acts of aggression, depression, sleeplessness or emotional outbursts. Then help the child understand why these chemical foods are unhealthy and encourage their proactiveness.
3. Share your notes on your observations with the school, particularly your child's teachers. Compare to see if similar behaviors are triggered at home as at school. For example, ask the teachers if your child's behavior changes after lunch or snack time?
4. For school-age children, write a list of what foods your child should avoid, especially when negative behavior occurs.
5. Make a list of the healthy foods your child can eat "instead" of unhealthy snacks and fast-food take-outs.
6. Recognize success. Your child's behavior should improve as his diet improves. Remember to praise him/her for sacrificing the tempting junk foods, and remind him/her how much better he/she feels and behaves as a result of eating a proper diet.
7. If all of your strategies have not been successful, seek counseling or nutritional assistance in developing a child/family plan that will work.
