B.O.U.N.C.E. For H.E.A.L.T.H.

When a 79-year-old "fire-ball" wrote me the following email, I paid attention:

" Hello ...from a 79 year old "Geezer" USN Submarine Vet. I wish to share with you the book "Miracles." Shortly after it was published, I was working at NASA/Houston while we were training the astronauts for their journeys to the Moon. Buz Aldrin was often in my lab in the late '60s to practice on the Lunar Landing Simulator.

I then purchased a 3-foot rebounder and thoroughly enjoyed it. I used it occasionally, but did not have the discipline to 'hit' it as often as I should have, although the results were most favorable; especially my balance on the dance floor.

I can still enjoy water-skiing and 'boogying' each Friday night. I can make a deep water start on one ski.

Recently I purchased a 12 foot trampoline which is soooo much fun that I use it nearly every day and often twice per day.

I have the little book written by a man who acquired many gold medals in wrestling competition who NEVER "pushed any iron." The MIRACLES of Rebound EXERCISE by Albert E. Carter has been in my library since 1979.

His only exercise was on a trampoline. His theory is that when the trampoline decelerates the body on the down trip, and then accelerates on the up trip, the forces compress each of the trillions of cells in your body; therefore squeezing out the waste materials.

And then while weightless, each cell expands back to normal volume to "inhale" new fuel. Most interesting, don't you think?

Also very interesting is the fact that the use of the trampoline greatly enhances my overall physical balance, especially on the dance floor."

We had a trampoline in our backyard when my kids were little. As they grew up, went to college, and moved into their own homes, I donated the old tramp to the neighbors. Now their kids jump and play on it. Well, after Geo's email and more conversations with him about B.O.U.N.C.E. therapy, Al Carter contacted me and sent me his books. Now, I am buying another trampoline, and this time it's FOR ME! I'm not talking about the three-foot rebounder, I'm talking a 12 foot trampoline!

Let me share some of Al Carter's work from The Miracles of Rebound Exercise:

"Rebound exercise is the most efficient, effective form of exercise yet devised by man." The Miracles of Rebound Exercise; Carter, Albert E.; The National institute of Reboundology and Health, Inc. Edmonds, Washington, 1979.

NASA says, "...for similar levels of heart rate and oxygen consumption, the magnitude of the biomechanical stimuli is greater with jumping on a trampoline than with running, a finding that might help identify acceleration parameters needed for the design of remedial procedures to avert deconditioning in persons exposed to weightlessness."

The above statement is one of several made in a scientific study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology 49(5): 881-887, 1980, which confirms many of the statements in The Miracles of Rebound Exercise. The Biomechanical Research Division, NASA-Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California performed the research, in cooperation with the Wenner-Gren Research laboratory, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky.

The four scientists, A, Bhattacharya, E. p, McCutcheon, E. Shvariz, and J, E. Greenleaf, secured the assistance of eight young men between the ages of 19 and 26 to each walk, jog, and run on a treadmill which was operated at four different speeds and then jump on a standard sized trampoline at four different heights to compare the difference between the two modes of exercise.

Although treadmill running had been studied many times before, the scientists found that "...measurements of the necessary variables have not been reported previously for trampoline exercise." The trampoline testing was conducted at least one week after the treadmill testing.

The six measurements that were taken on all eight of the subjects were:

  1. A pulse before exercising
  2. A pulse immediately after exercising
  3. The amount of oxygen consumed while exercising
  4. The amount of G-force experienced at the ankle while exercising
  5. The amount of G-force experienced at the lower back while exercising

  6. The amount of G-force experienced at the forehead while exercising

The pulse was taken by a battery-powered electrocardiograph taped to the subject's body, which transmitted signals to a custom designed receiver, which in turn recorded the information by electronically recording it on a chart. The oxygen consumption was measured with a K-meter that the subject carried on his back.

The G-force experienced by the ankle, back and forehead of each of the university students was measured by small sensitive accelerometers which were placed in Plexiglas holders taped to the ankle, the small of the back, and the forehead.

After a thorough medical examination, the healthy students were issued a pair of shorts and new Nike running shoes to standardize the conditions to be measured. They were given familiarization sessions on laboratory procedures, treadmill running, and trampoline jumping to ensure the exercise techniques would be the same. Each student then walked or ran four different speeds on the treadmill with a five to ten minute rest period between runs while their recorded statistics were compared with previous treadmill studies.

A week later, these same athletes returned to bounce on a trampoline at four different heights with a five to ten minute rest period in between exercise sessions. Again they recorded their statistics, only this time, they had no previous studies to compare them to since trampolining had not been previously studied. The only studies available were the preliminary studies, which began in August of 1977 on passive restrained humans and animals exposed to increasing frequency and amplitude of vibration forces designed to increase heart rate and metabolic activity.
These responses measured whole-body vibration and resembled those during mild exercise. The results suggested that body vibration could be used in place of exercise for those who are ambulatory.

Hi "Doc"...After an hour and a half on my riding mower the other day, the slight arthritis in my lower back was quite painful, as usual with the mower. I "snapped" to the idea that I should try the "tramp" to see if it would help. The arthritis is intermittent...sometimes it hurts; sometimes NO pain.

I climbed onto the trampoline and completed 75 cycles. Shortly afterward, I noticed that ALL the pain was GONE!!! I will have to monitor the same if it happens again in the future... grin...Geo
PS: the 12 foot tramp is sooooo much more FUN than the 3 foot 'rebounder'.
