Q: I would like to be involved working with you. What can I do to help? I would love to have flyers or literature to hand out. I'm not sure there is enough awareness in my arena - I only know there are many thick-headed people I care about walking around with headaches and body pains with a diet cola in hand...they simply won't listen.

A: Anything you can do to get the word out about aspartame and other artificial sweeteners is helpful to your community of co-workers, neighbors, schoolmates, or family members.

For the naysayer, you can refer them to my book, Sweet Poison, and to our other websites with information about Splenda® and aspartame that will also get the info into the community. This has been a grassroots movement, no doubt, but helping one person at a time is the best any of us can do right now. Someday, the truth will unfold for everyone.

Q: In the early 1980's, I used diet sodas when they first came out and had unbearable two-day headaches afterward. It didn't take me long to realize that I couldn't handle "NutraSweet®." Several years later, I purchased a "lite" lemonade mix, and the same thing started happening again.

Over the years, I have unsuspectedly eaten aspartame hidden in various products, resulting in my entire family suffering along with me, as I lost my memory, picked fights, and would cry for no apparent reason. One day, I purchased Wrigley's® gum, unaware it contained aspartame. I happily drove to work, drank a Yoo-Hoo® for breakfast, followed by a stick of the gum. Within 30 minutes, I was crying and confused, and was forced to ask my employer to relieve me from a meeting.

Later that day, I felt my body "detox" from the aspartame chemicals, and I was left with a tremendous sense of relief and absolute exhaustion once the internal trauma was over. I searched through my office trash to discover that the gum was the culprit! These are only a few of my aspartame episodes.

A: Wow! Thanks for sharing your experience with aspartame. People just like you who have these revelations and personal experiences are the ones who really affect changes. Please feel free to print out info from any of our Web sites to share with friends, family and community members.

You MUST read all your labels before you purchase a food product because so many products, like the gum, have aspartame, sucralose, and other chemical sweeteners in them but are NOT labeled as "sugar-free." Unless you think to read the "long" label of ingredients you'd never know what's in the chemical brew you are about to eat.

You might want to do a hair analysis and detox, too. It's important to remove the toxic by-products from the food chemicals and to replace the nutrients depleted from a processed, chemical food diet. Visit

Subject: Crystal Lite®

Q: I used aspartame in Crystal Lite. I developed a slight tremor and I blacked out a couple of years ago. The doctors ran an EEG & blood circulation tests but found nothing wrong. I increased my use of the powdered drink mix until I wound up using 2 1/2+ quarts a day. One day, I had another seizure, and went to the hospital.

The CT Scan in the hospital was normal, but I now take Dilantin, which has increased the tremors many-fold. There is no warning on the labels of these products, and I think they should have warnings just like tobacco. I called a product liaison attorney yesterday and their first question was "Did the doctor say aspartame caused this?"

"No," I replied. They were not interested in my concerns. I think lawyers are making a big mistake not only for themselves, but also for the public at large.

A: I am so sorry you are facing so many struggles. Have you considered keeping a journal and tracking the foods you eat, your symptoms and reactions, etc? You can then go on an elimination diet, ridding your pantry of all aspartame products (read the labels closely...it seems to appear out of nowhere sometimes) and continuing tracking your symptoms - if any. You can use this information as evidence when discussing your concerns with your medical practitioner or legal counsel. My guess - you will see a significant reduction in your symptoms when you completely quit using aspartame; if they don't completely disappear, that is.

Subject: aspartame free and loving it

Q: My sister sent me one of your articles regarding the effects of aspartame. I was amazed at what I read because I had most of the symptoms listed, including headaches, vertigo, dizziness, extreme fatigue, weight gain, bloating, etc. I have not had anything sugar-free since I read your article on August 2. I feel so much better!! I have energy, no more headaches or dizziness. People now ask if I lost weight. I haven't, but I believe the bloating has gone away. I will never drink or eat anything that contains aspartame in it again.

Please keep up your life-saving research on this horrible debilitating product.

A: Congratulations!! First of all, we are thrilled to hear you are feeling better. Secondly, thanks for the kudos. In this business, one can never get enough of those! The injustice behind the issue of "diet sweetener safety" gets very frustrating at times. Knowing the dangers it creates within human beings is all too real, witnessing the damaging health effects through my personal illness from aspartame, seeing the increase in diabetes, obesity, emotional disturbances, learning disabilities, sexual dysfunction - well, all these effects from aspartame in the public food supply were predicted to occur by the research scientists studying aspartame over 30 years ago.

All in all, it's people like you who keep this movement going - slowly moving forward with the hope this truth will soon be exposed to all!

Subject: aspartame and seizures

Q: I used aspartame for years and had horrible headaches, and then started having seizures. None of the seizure medicines would work for me. After I quit all aspartame, I'd still get seizures once a month or so during my sleep. I haven't used aspartame for the last 10 years, but the seizures have never completely gone away. It seems I also lost much of my long-term memory. My doctor says it could be from the seizures. Do you think I could have PKU and then used the aspartame, which made it worse? Growing up, my mom raised me on all healthy foods, and I didn't start using aspartame until my mid-20's. That's when my headaches started. I used to drink 2 to 3 diet cokes a day and sometimes not eat at all.

A: It is not likely you are PKU, but you may be PKU recessive, meaning you carry the gene but it is not dominant. If indeed you are PKU recessive and consume aspartame, you would more than likely have some damaging reactions, some possibly life-threatening. Unfortunately, no one has funded any research into this aspartame reaction. It would be interesting to know the "real" science behind this possibility.

The physical damage you've experienced from aspartame may be permanent, nonetheless, but all is not lost. You can detox and restore any depleted nutrients, and then see if your health returns. Proper nutrition after years of using toxic food chemicals is like fertilizing a starving plant. It works wonders!!

Check all the labels on the foods you consume. It sounds as if you are still using a product with aspartame, but are unaware of it. I'd guess you are getting into it from medications or some unknown source.

Subject: What foods to avoid

Q: Hi there! I am a great believer in your work and just recently realized the damaging effects from the chemicals food companies are putting into our food. I avoid most processed foods now because I think nature shouldn't be messed around with in the current way it is!!! I am researching what foods have chemical ingredients so I can justify to others why I won't eat processed foods.

A: Good luck and "bravo to you" for taking your health into your own hands!

I suggest you avoid the highly processed foods and focus on buying at the natural food markets and eat, as often as possible, homemade foods made with natural ingredients. Avoid all "diet" foods that contain Splenda® and aspartame, in particularly. Your health will be your testament to why you no longer eat processed foods and sugar-free products.
