Q: Dear Dr. Hull,

I just read an article in the June 26th issue of First Magazine about the dangers of Splenda®. The information provided in the article and on your sites have helped my health in so many ways because I've stopped using Splenda and I'm already feeling like my old self again.

I paid close attention to the article and the additional information provided in the sidebars. After reading the article, I looked up "Splenda Dangers" online and found a few sites. Your sites have the most comprehensive information available online! I've taken the recommendations to heart and I've switched to natural sweeteners and I'm reading all labels. It's been a few weeks since I stopped using Splenda and I'm already noticing a big difference. My bloating, constipation, and stomach cramps have gone!

Thank you for getting the information out there. I wonder how many people are running to their doctors with these same symptoms and have no idea it's what's in there cabinet that is making them sick.

A: Thank you. That article was about Lucy, my personal assistant. She unwittingly used Splenda® before she met me. After meeting me and talking about the dangers of Splenda, she stopped using it and all her symptoms disappeared.

I'm thrilled the article and the information on my Web sites have helped you so much. You are one of many readers we've heard from who benefited from reading the story in First For Women.

You may be interested in hearing that Lucy began experiencing similar abdominal cramping and other gastrointestinal issues a couple weeks ago. It lasted about a week. She had just begun using a different brand of flavored creamer in her morning coffee. When she read the back of the label on the creamer, she was surprised to see sucralose listed as the last ingredient. The bottle was not marked "sugar free" or "diet." I was not surprised at all to hear Lucy report that her newest symptoms disappeared within 24 hours after her last serving of the coffee creamer.

So, here she is working for me, advising people to read all their labels and even she overlooked it! It just goes to show, those of us in the know have to be careful, too.

Subject: Hair samples

Q: Dr. Hull,

Instead of cutting a new hair sample for the hair analysis test, can you use a fresh hair sample from hair that comes out when you brush your hair? I have very long hair so a lot comes out when I brush.

A: Dear LJ,

The lab prefers the sample be taken from the nape of your neck, specifically the first inch of new growth. Anything longer than that would be cut down to the first inch of new growth creating the necessary sample for testing. The lab specifically wants that new growth of hair. The lab requires a full, packed tablespoon of it to ensure proper testing. If you send in the longer lengths, they will cut it down and you may end up not having a large enough sample for proper testing.

Subject: Oprah uses Splenda®

Q: Dear Dr. Hull,

I was watching the Oprah Winfrey show the other day and I was surprised and disappointed to hear her talk about using Splenda. I love Oprah, but I'm disappointed that she is telling her millions of international viewers to use it in their weight loss programs.

I am writing a letter to Oprah today. I will tell her about my personal experiences using Splenda and how dangerous I think it is. What else can we do about this? She is so powerful and influential. I worry that people will start getting sicker and maybe even give this junk to their kids. What are your thoughts?

A: Dear JP,

In the last week, I've heard from a number of people with the same concerns about Oprah and her personal trainer, Bob Greene, promoting Splenda. I've posted their online contact information on Splendaexposed.com so readers can send her their stories and harmful experiences about the dangers of using chlorinated "sugar" in their foods.

Letters from people who have suffered painful side effects from Splenda will take a step in the right direction by informing her of her questionable health advice recommending this chemical sweetener. If enough people share their personal stories and the information I have posted on my Web sites and in my book, Splenda®: Is It Safe Or Not?, maybe Oprah will begin to get the message and truly help her fans find health and weight loss through natural whole food diets, exercise, rest, and a positive attitude instead of manufactured chlorine as a sweetener.

Q: I don't know anything about the whole foods diet you keep mentioning in your books. How do I do it? What is it? Please help! I want to feel better and lose weight.

A: My detox book will give you information on a real whole foods diet, and I include my 75/25 Eating Plan for balancing pH levels.

Look online for recipes for whole foods. Whole Foods Market often offers free cooking classes. You never know, you may end up liking this a lot more AND you may find yourself entertaining friends at your home with great new dishes. Try to look at this as an opportunity to expand your culinary horizons. Make it fun. Get excited about this new phase of your life and know that you will feel better, your skin will look better, and you may lose weight if you want to.

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn new things and find new, healthy foods you may love even more than the highly processed foods saturating the market today and drowning good health.
