Hat's Off to Jamie's School Dinners. Jamie Oliver is trying to improve Britain's school dinners through his Feed Me Better Campaign to ban the junk and get good, fresh food back in schools. He started a massive petition to lobby the British government to persuade schools to ditch the processed, ready-made junk the students are used to eating, and replace it with fresh, tasty, nutritious food, prepared from scratch every day.
I first learned about, and viewed, the BBC series on Jamie's campaign against low-quality school meals while speaking in London at a conference on childhood obesity April 2005. His BBC series, Jamie's School Dinners, took Britain by storm, and has since been picked up in the States.
Jamie has lots of advice for parents wanting to find out about the quality of their child's school meals, ways to start a campaign for change, and some simple ways to improve your child's general diet.
Are you concerned about your child's school dinners? Do you know what the schools are actually serving? Do you know who to talk to about this problem, or even who's in charge? Oliver is doing something about it.
Please visit Jamie's School Dinners to view clips from the American version of his show. If you want to see the original BBC series, contact BBC America, The Biography Channel, or PBS for the next airtime. If possible, order a copy of the DVD from the BBC - it is well worth your time!
