Did You Know?

* The new C2 Cola(®) may have half the sugar, but it also contains three artificial chemical sweeteners - aspartame, sucralose, and acesulfame-K.

* Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple and has been shown to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling, and helps thin the blood. Its effectiveness as a pain modulator is more effective when consumed before a meal or three hours afterwards.

* Selenium boosts the antioxidant power of vitamin E, and a daily supplement of at least 100 mcg may be necessary to provide optimal immune system response.

* McDonald's has a new strategy for getting back to international success. CEO Jim Cantalupo was brought out of retirement to take over the helm of the McDonald's Corporation, and has publicly announced that he will give himself
eighteen months to turn the company's brand back around, which includes re-establishing brand identity as well as executing new menu items to satisfy the newly-food conscious eighteen to thirty-five year old market group.

* Tired of hearing about 'low-carb?' At least 800 low-carb products have been released over the last two years, and more and more of them are wiggling onto supermarket shelves, sliding into vending machines, and appearing at foodservice counters, giving the low-carb category an impetus greater than any new phenomenon in the industry since the 'heyday' of low-fat products in the early-nineties.

* The same companies who make your medications are also on to the animal meds. Look behind these animal-only brands, like Pfizer, Intervet, Elanco, and you'll still find the big pharmaceuticals: Akzo Nobel, Eli Lilly and Aventis/Merck.

* Typically, most patients don't choose their drugs, so pharmaceutical representatives on average target physicians.

* Diabetic patients frequently consume low-calorie products containing high intensity chemical sweeteners to reduce their calorie intake; so artificial sweetener consumption by diabetics is likely to be above average and long-term.

* Sweetness is only one of the five basic tastes - sour, bitter, sweet, pungent and salty - that can be accepted without hesitation by babies having no previous experience of taste. So, sweetness is a positive stimulus linked to instinctive desires of being human.

* Just like the discovery of aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, and Ace-K were all accidentally discovered in the laboratory.
