Where did you get your PhD?

A: I finished my PhD through Clayton College, as they are one of two natural health curriculums in the USA that I respect the most. I started my Doctorate at a four-year university in Texas, but couldn't stand their curriculum - standard old-school nutrition. I was going mad!! Clayton is criticized by some for having a distant learning program, but times are changing, and no university other than Bastyr in Seattle has up-to-date alternative curriculums in nutrition that represent the current issues humans face today. Clayton College's program is one of the finest out there, and in my opinion as a former college Professor, a most impressive program. Too bad many university curriculums are not keeping up to date with the changes in alternative medicine. Maybe someday, the old way of teaching nutrition will update.

Long story short, I received my PhD in Nutrition from Clayton College of Natural Health in Birmingham.

Subject: Ace-K in Somersweet®

Q: Hello Dr. Jan.

Somersweet is a sweetener that many SomerSizers use. However, I understand the original formula was changed to now include Ace-K. My understanding from some SSers is that this agent is similar to aspartame.

A: Unless they have changed drastically from the original formula, the Ace-K in Somersweet is listed as a disclosure because they feed the mung bean (used in SS) Ace-K to make the bean sweeter. I do not recommend using Ace-K itself as a sweetener because it is manufactured with methylene chloride, a carcinogen. (On page 249 in my book Splenda®: Is It Safe Or Not?, I include the FDA report on Ace-K, and write that the methylene chloride is used as a solvent in the initial manufacturing of the sweetener.) But I think it's safe in relation to using Ace-K as a fertilizer to sweeten the mung bean, as in SS and in a product my vitamin lab makes, Tastes Like Sugar®. Ace-K is used as a fertilizer because it contains potassium, nitrogen, hydrogen, sodium, and carbon. If the mung bean itself is the manufacturing plant, then it should naturally eliminate the toxins (or we hope it will). But, in a world of concentrated, toxic sweeteners saturating our food supply (and our bodies), I always say to prioritize your poisons: the mung bean is not going to harm the body in the dangerous fashion aspartame or sucralose will.

Heads up though: Acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) is a general-purpose sweetener and flavor enhancer. New chemical sweeteners (like Splenda®) and the sweetener blends (aspartame, sucralose and acesulfame K blended together in one product) may be causing users to show signs of weight gain, disruption of sleep patterns, sexual dysfunction, increases in cancer, MS, Lupus, diabetes, and a list of epidemic degenerative diseases. The corporations continue to stand tough in their denial of any connection to chemical sweetener additives, but beware of these sweetener blends.

Subject: WheyLow®

Q: Some SSers mention a product called Wheylow® as a sugar substitute.

A: I have been asked about this product many times, and according to my research, it is a good alternative for the insistent sweetener users. My best advice is to use NO added sweeteners, and learn to be satisfied with the natural sweetness of whole foods. But if you do insist on sprinkling a sweet pack of powdered something.... use unprocessed, natural sugars like Sucanat®. Let your body be the sugar refinery. It's hard to add fat and gain weight when your body is burning the sucrose.

To sum this up: I think the SS is fine to use, and Hats Off to Suzanne Somers for her wonderful program. She has helped many people, and this reflects integrity.

Subject: SweetPoison Case History

Q: I have had fibromayalgia for 5 years. I first started noticing that I couldn't use my hands properly, my feet ached - and then I would ache in different parts of my body. I had 2 teeth capped because of pain that my dentist couldn't explain, I had continual facial pain. Pushing a supermarket trolley, hanging up the washing, ironing etc were all agony to me. Friends couldn't understand because I looked fine. We lived in a beautiful 3-story house which we had to sell because I couldn't get up and down the stairs.

My doctor put me on steroids and amitriptyline to help me sleep. I had terrible memory loss and got confused mid- sentence, so weaned myself off the antidepressants. As a wife and mother I felt terrible and inadequate. I could no longer do the things with my family that I had done before. I put on over 20 kgs in weight, which I found hard to get off because it hurt to exercise. I was taking Brufen (anti-inflammatory drug) and Paradex - painkiller every 4 hours. I didn't have to look at the clock because my body would be telling me it was time to take some more pain killers.

A friend read your book Sweet Poison and lent it to me. It was like a light had been switched on!! I had replaced all my sugar with Equal about 6 years ago when I went on the Atkins Diet. I would probably have 8 - 10 coffees a day (decaf) with an Equal pill in it and always chewed Equal chewing gum as a breath freshener.

Immediately I took all Equal out of my diet. That was 8 weeks ago. The change has been dramatic to say the least! I still have some pain, but I haven't taken pain killers in over 6 weeks! I can't thank the person enough who gave me the book Sweet Poison, and I look forward to being pain free when this terrible chemical gets out of my body. WHY DIDN'T SOMEONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS???? Thank God someone now has!!!!

A: Thank you so much for your email. This is what keeps me going - knowing wonderful people like you have returned to a normal, healthy life once they found out about aspartame. The silencing of this information is a true crime - the corporations and advertisers behind misleading people should be brought to justice and made to pay the piper!!

So glad you have found this truth out in time to prevent any permanent body damage. Keep spreading the word about aspartame and Sweet Poison, and you will help others following on your same path. At least we can help others through our experiences, even if one person at a time!

Subject: pH confusion

Q: I have recently purchased a pH testing strip kit called "Enzymedica" in order to test my urine & saliva. The urine checks out at 5.5 & the saliva hit the high mark of 7.5. Why the difference?

Thanks a lot.

A: In my opinion, an average pH for the water in the body is 6.4. Below is too acidic, and this is where disease proliferates like in an acidic aquarium or swimming pool. Too alkaline dries the water in the body and causes hardening of the arteries and kidney stones, etc. So, the blood should be 7.4 but the water in your body 6.4.

Your mouth is too alkaline at 7.5, which means your digestive enzymes in the saliva are ineffective. Don't drink while you eat and let your saliva begin to digest your food in the mouth. Also, check for any thrush or Candida on the tongue. Is your tongue white first thing in the morning? At 5.5, your urine is too acidic. Obviously, it has gone through a change as it made its way from your alkaline mouth through your body. This may be a sign of malabsorption and inefficient digestion. I would consider taking a daily digestive enzyme. By adjusting your diet, see if you can get both saliva and urine closer to 6.4.

Subject: Sick for 2 years

Q: Dr.Hull,

For the past two years I have been extremely sick. I am very acidic, have hypothyroidism, low adrenal output, horrible depression, etc. This all occurred when I was dieting for a bodybuilding contest. I ordered a hair analysis test and it showed many metals, but detoxification has been ineffective. I have lost most of my muscle and gained large amounts of fat. My joints hurt, I have no energy. I drastically need help before I kill myself.

A: Start with getting off any isolated amino acids, food chemicals, and diet sweeteners. I would continue to detox. Try a liver cleanse, colon cleanse, take niacin while sitting in a sauna. Glucosumine and digestive enzymes will help with the joint pain.

Be patient with the detox process. Depending upon the severity of your condition, it may get a lot worse before it gets better. You have to be strong and not give up on your self.

Subject: Discolored semen

A: Dear Dr. Hull,

Quick question. I am a little afraid. When detoxing, is it normal for the toxins to be brown in semen? Also, when toxins come out of the body do they irritate the eyes (i.e. gritty and itchy)?

A: You are witnessing where your toxins have deposited - within your prostate. It is common for heavy metals to gravitate to the last and lowest gland in the body (other than lymph nodes in the leg). The prostate appears to be holding heavy metals, and by golly, you are moving them out!

I recommend a book you will greatly benefit from by Larry Clapp titled 90 Days To Prostate Health. It is full of wonderful information that may help you understand what may be the cause of this discoloration.

Keep detoxing and this should go away when the toxins are gone.

Subject: surprise ingredients

Q: I did not realize I was using aspartame until tonight. I have recently been using Knox gelatin for my nails, but have been feeling overly tired, headaches, upset stomach, loose bowels & restless legs. I was about to take my serving envelope and looked at the ingredients only to find this word I had never heard of before - Phenylalanine. Aspartame is also part of the ingredients along with many food colorings. I am a vegan and my body is not use to me putting stuff like this inside me. I just didn't realize it could be harmful.

When I put Phenylalanine into the computer. I came upon your website. I now will stop using this product, and return it to the store.

A: You've come to the right place. My assistant, Lucy, is a long-time vegetarian who has also struggled with issues surrounding chemical sweeteners. Besides being unhealthy for you, let me warn you that aspartame and sucralose (Splenda) have been heavily tested on animals. One of our concerns for the vegetarian community is that some vegetarians are junk food veggies, and they don't usually realize the awful effects of these chemicals. Additionally, many vegetarians don't realize the animal testing done on chemical sweeteners and other food additives.

Aspartame and sucralose are being used as flavor enhancers in what would seem to otherwise be, healthy alternatives. Please try to only use raw sugars, sucanat, pure agave nectar, barley malt and other natural flavorings. Only use those that are unadulterated, and you'll notice the difference.

Remember to read the labels of any products you put in your mouth. These chemicals are in toothpaste, OTC drugs, cereals, gums, mints... the list combines over 6,000 products. So be careful.
