"COLA" DID YOU KNOWS?
* In America in 1850, about thirteen ounces of soda was consumed per person per year. In the late 1980s, more than 500 twelve-ounce cans of sodas were consumed per person per year. The 1994 annual report of the beverage industry shows that per-capita consumption of sodas is 49.1 gallons per year. Of this amount, 28.2 percent of consumption is diet soda.
* A survey at the campus of Pennsylvania State University has shown that some students drink as much as fourteen cans of soda a day. One girl consumed thirty-seven cokes in two days. Many admitted they could not live without soft drinks. If deprived, they developed withdrawal symptoms much like those addicted to other drugs.
* For the four weeks ending January 26, 2004, Splenda's dollar-market share of the tabletop-sweetener market exceeded that of Equal-brand products for the first time, 29.7 percent to 27.2 percent, according to Information Resources Inc., a Chicago-based concern that tracks CPG sales in all mass stores except Wal-Mart. Sweet'N Low sugar substitutes stayed in third place, with a 19.5-percent market share. Those numbers further displayed momentum that began last year, when Splenda's dollar sales rose about sixty-nine percent while Equal's fell by eight percent and Sweet'N Low's rose one percent.
* When Monsanto sold its sweetener business in the year 2000, including the NutraSweet brand sweetener, it brought Monsanto $440 million.
* Dr. Ralph Walton compiled a list of controlled human and animals studies while looking for the effects of aspartame. Out of ninety independently funded studies, eighty-three found one or more problems caused by aspartame. But out of the seventy-four studies funded by the aspartame industry (Monsanto, G.D. Searle, etc.), every single one of them claimed that no problems were found.
* Aspartame, sucralose, and acesulfame-K all claim to have the most studies in history performed on their sweetener, with all studies showing no problems nor any negative test results.
