Food chemicals and preservatives were first introduced in our modern food supply for health and safety benefits to protect the consumer from microorganisms found in foods that were not eaten quickly. Refining sugar and flour first came about during navigation periods when food remained on ships for months at a time, and typically turned rancid. Wartime brings about new food technologies because of the environmental circumstances that threaten food safety. Now, Big Pharma corporations are taking food production over, and filling our crops and cattle with even more chemicals.
Today, the family farmer is being replaced by "big businesses", and corporate farming is designed to harvest profit above quality. GM, GMO, GEO, and GE foods are the "MO" of corporate farms, and modern pharmaceutical farming is saturating the global food supply.
A genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. These techniques combine DNA molecules from different sources merged into one molecule to create a new set of genes.
A genetically modified (GM) organism has had its genetic material altered through any method. Traditional breeding and plant hybridization are the most common genetic modification techniques, but these are rapidly becoming passé. The more popular genetically engineered (GE) organism is one that is modified using techniques that permit the direct transfer or removal of genes in that organism. Such techniques are also called recombinant DNA or rDNA techniques. Transgenic organisms have a gene from another organism moved into them.
According to the UK's The Telegraph, scientists have successfully introduced human genes into 300 dairy cows to produce milk with the same properties as human breast milk. They believe this "alteration" is a good thing, justifying that human milk contains higher quantities of key nutrients that can boost the immune system in babies and reduce the risk of infections. These corporate scientists believe that "human" milk produced from herds of genetically modified cows will provide an alternative to human breast milk (from the human) and from formula milk, which is criticized as an inferior substitute.
The long-term health consequences of GM foods are not "scientifically" known, but the unnatural and mutated effects are now becoming obvious. Consuming genetically modified plant DNA can lead to the development of "GMO" microorganisms inside the human body, and this can result in "GMO" microbes continuously reproducing inside the body. GE organisms actually become part of the bacteria in the digestive tract, and the implications to both the host animal and the human consumer can be deadly.
Only one human study has been published on the effects of GMO microorganisms inside the human body, but it revealed that genetic material inserted into GE soy transferred into the DNA of bacteria inside the intestines and continued to grow. Even after eating the GE foods was stopped, the GE proteins continued to produce inside the intestines.
The Institute for Responsible Technology discovered that the genetic engineering process created massive collateral damage in hundreds to thousands of locations throughout a plant's DNA. So what is this affecting inside the human body, or inside a fetus? Bt toxins (Bacillus thuringiensis) inserted into GM food crops to kill pests can turn bacteria in the intestines into pesticide factories. Studies show that DNA in food does travel into the organs, and is absorbed by a fetus.
So - this leads to today's pharmaceutical farming concerns. Antibiotic genes are being inserted into most GM crops, and if these genes transfer to the human consumer, it creates antibiotic resistant diseases.
Today, there is an E.coli outbreak in Europe, but initially, EU food ministers were clueless to the definitive source. They first blamed cucumbers from Spain, but that didn't pan out as the cause. Then they studied 17 different batches of bean sprouts in Germany. Tests on bean sprouts from a farm in northern Germany failed to produce traces of the E.coli 0104 bacteria, but after further studies, sprouts were determined to be the cause. The EU is warning people to stop eating fresh foods, but is not warning consumers to be concerned with any of the GMO selections - like milk from cows that produce human breast milk, for example.
Interestingly, this particular E.coli strain is resistant to eight different classes of antibiotic drugs. This particular E.coli variation is a member of the O104 strain, and O104 strains are normally never resistant to antibiotics. Why this outbreak, then?
Remember that antibiotic genes are being inserted into most GM crops, and if these genes transfer to the human consumer, it creates antibiotic resistant diseases.
Maybe someone should inform our world leaders that we should stop messing with Mother Nature and cease growing GM foods. Real food would be cheaper anyway! Well, maybe not for Monsanto's stock-holders...
