I just want to share a story with Dr. Hull, and she is more than welcome to share it with other readers. I was mixing a protein powder drink called Whey to Go®, which is sold at a local health food store, for a healthy shake. I added a cup of blueberries every morning and did this for two years. I knew the protein powder had a warning with phenylalanine for people with PKU (which I knew I didn't have); however, I started having serious side effects - blacking out, numbness in my arms and panicky feelings (I've never had panic attacks). At first I thought it was a middle ear problem. To make a long story short, I ended up at the emergency room, my primary care physician was there, an ENT, and a neurologist.
I didn't realize what was happening to me until my husband and I went away for our 10-year anniversary and I didn't take the protein drink with me. While I was away, I started feeling better. When I came home, I went to fix me a drink and decided to look up phenylalanine on the computer and that's when I came across your web site and the article on sweet poison that had listed numerous symptoms I had been having.
I have had two MRI's, and nothing is wrong. By the time the neurologist decided to do blood work, which I had suggested after I felt I had found out what my problem really was, my blood levels were high, but not over a certain % to cause her to do a PKU test on me.
Anyway, thank you for this info. I now look more closely at what I put into my system.
