Healthy Feedback

Dear Dr. Hull,

I was delighted to see your television interview on the evening news (here in Austin) the other night. Since I'm a huge fan of your work, and impressed by your determination in taking on one of the most serious health risks facing our nation (poisonous artificial sweeteners), here are a few comments:

First, it's obvious that the television piece (airing in about 90 seconds) was a cut-down version of a longer interview. The media seems unable to deal with anything for more than a minute or two (ADD?) and this piece reflected that. In addition, they were compelled to add the FDA disclaimer ("Aspartame has been tested and proven safe"), which most people don't believe anymore. But, on the more positive side, this interview could not have been broadcast at a more vital time.

We are at a point where the beverage companies are finally bowing to public pressure to take "junk" out of the public schools, and their current bargaining position, to assist weight control in kids, is to remove sugared beverages while leaving artificially-sweetened beverages in the schools. Even though your television piece was edited down, it served the important purpose of heightening public awareness concerning the dangers of chemical sweeteners, which may actually be more dangerous to overall health than their sugared cousins. And it also told parents the battle to protect the health of their children is not over with the simple removal of sugared beverages.

Keep up the good work. Your work is affecting the lives of millions of Americans.

Best wishes,
RC
