Medication Side Effects for Fever Relievers
Bayer Aspirin (aspirin)
Contraindications: NSAID allergy, viral infections in children and teenagers, syndrome of asthma, rhinitis, and nasal polyps.
Warnings/Precautions: Increased risk of bleeding with heavy alcohol use (>3 drinks/day). May inhibit platelet function; can adversely affect inherited (hemophilia) or acquired (hepatic disease, vitamin K deficiency) bleeding disorders. Monitor for bleeding and ulceration. Avoid in history of active peptic ulcer, severe renal failure, severe hepatic insufficiency, and sodium restricted diets. Associated with elevated LFTs, BUN, and serum creatine, hyperkalemia, and prolonged bleeding time. Avoid 1 week before and during labor.
Adverse Reactions: Fever, hypothermia, dysrhythmias, hypotension, agitation, cerebral edema, dehydration, dyspepsia, hyperkalemia, GI bleeding, hearing loss, tinnitus, problems in pregnancy.
Tylenol (acetaminophen)
Warnings/Precautions: May cause liver damage.
Interactions: Increased risk of hepatotoxicity with excessive alcohol use (>3 drinks/day).
Pregnancy: Safety in pregnancy or nursing not known.
Advil Migraine (ibuprofen)
Warnings/Precautions: May cause severe allergic reaction (e.g.. facial swelling, hives, asthma, shock).
Interactions: Risk of stomach bleeding with alcohol.
Pregnancy: Safety in pregnancy and nursing not known.
Excedrin Migraine (acetaminophen-caffeine -aspirin)
Warnings/Precautions: Children and teenagers should not use for viral illnesses. APAP and ASA may cause liver damage and GI bleeding.
Interactions: Limit caffeine containing medications, foods, or beverages. Caution with alcohol.
Pregnancy: Safety in pregnancy and nursing not known.
