Media Q & A with Dr. Hull

Q: Dr. Janet Starr Hull;

I pitched an idea of a three-piece series on aspartame to my news director, but they do not want to do it this May. My news director told me they are going to pick up a story about saccharin, so we don't have to stretch out our crew and overtime too much. She definitely wants to hold on to the story, though. Maybe in November.

I will be sure to let you know when they decide to use your information.

Thanks for sending the info on aspartame, and autographing your book. I'm about half way through it now.

A: Sorry the time for the story is not now, but I understand the hesitation - I am used to it, actually!! YOU keep pressing on, as one day this WILL be aired!! Maybe over the next few months this issue will become more mainstream, and then, the media support will follow.

I just returned from London where I spoke to dignitaries, researchers, and the media about juvenile obesity connected to artificial sweeteners. The speech was well received, but I feel the USA will be the last country to "give in" to the fact that fake foods are killing the younger generation, and definitely making them sick and fat. Diabetes and obesity are two of the most marked examples. The EU countries do not have the same influences from the pharmaceuticals, so some countries can get the much needed information to the public a bit easier than here. They still have the dreaded politics and advertising giants to pass through, but at least, they are not as "far gone" in fake foods, ego, and greed as the USA.

Let me know when you're ready to push forward - one day this will be the hottest topic in America. Take care.

Q: I'm a producer for ABC News 20/20 and I'm researching a possible story about aspartame addiction. Please give me a call when you have a moment, I'd like to discuss the issue with you.

A: Exciting, and what a topic to choose! I receive frequent emails from people concerned they are, indeed, addicted to diet colas. This is a multifarious issue, but bottom line, diet products have both a physical and emotional addictive quality. The issue we need to focus on primarily, nonetheless, is the "addictive habit" diet sweeteners are creating within our youth. Children are being raised with misinformation about healthy eating and are not being taught
"healthy limits" to eating these chemical foods. When diet soda machines are placed at schools and malls, we are "feeding" this addiction. Mainstream media CAN do something to help set this misinformation straight.

Q: When I spoke with the producer, she kindly said she could not get approval for the story on weight gain associated with aspartame use. The story was dropped.

Subject: Natural Sodas

Q: Do you know of any safe sodas to drink?

A: Whole Foods and co-ops sell products with natural sugars called China Cola and Reed's Ginger Ale. It is hard to find natural colas in the states, but healthy sodas are all over Europe. Britain, for example, has a light sparkling
drink made with hand-picked elderflowers called bottlegreen elderflower presse® at www.bottlegreen.co.uk. It's excellent, yet has a small amount of natural sugar. R.W. Knudsen® brand Diet Spritzers are sweetened with Lo Han fruit extract. Go to KnudsenJuices.com for more information.

We have mostly low-quality products in the States - cheap to make but big profits for the corps. Little to no nutritional value for the human, though. And we wonder why Americans are the sickest culture in the world? I'd look for the best products at the health food stores/shops, and enjoy only an occasional soda-type drink with natural sugars.

Good luck and good health.
