The FDA has issued a public health advisory concerning phenylpropanolamine (PPA). This drug is an ingredient used in many over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription cough and cold medications as a decongestant, and in OTC weight loss products.
All drugs containing phenylpropanolamine are being recalled. The companies are asking consumers to call 800-548-3708 or the 800 number written on the product box with the lot number on the box. They will send you postage to return the product back to them, and will also issue you a refund.
PPA has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in the brain) among women ages 18-49, generally within three days after starting use of the medication. Similar problems were not found in men, but the FDA has recommended that everyone (even children) seek alternative medicines.
