- An estimated 16 million Americans have Type II diabetes, the sixth leading cause of death overall.
- Many studies have linked a high intake of refined carbohydrates and other foods with a high "glycemic index" with the development of diabetes.
- The body's main source of fuel is a simple sugar called "glucose."
- Most of the food we eat is broken down into glucose.
- After digestion, glucose passes into our bloodstream where it is available for the body's various cells to use it for growth and energy.
- Insulin must be present in order to permit glucose into the cells.
- When we eat, the pancreas automatically produces the right amount of insulin to move the glucose from our blood into our cells.
- In diabetics, the pancreas produces little to no insulin, or the body does not respond at all to the insulin that is produced. As a result, glucose builds up in the blood, overflows into the urine, and passes out of the body. The body loses its main source of fuel even though the blood may contain large amounts of glucose.
- Foods with a high glycemic index cause a spike in insulin production.
- All of the following famous personalities are diabetic:
- Haiti's leader Francois Duvalier
- Blues musician B.B. King
- ABC News reporter Sylvia Chase
- Boxer "Smokin' Joe" Frasier
- Tennis player Arthur Ashe
- Singer David Crosby
- Singer Neil Young
- The NutraSweet Company gives matching funds to The American Diabetes Association.
