Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness can be fatal. Stroke victims may suffer brain damage if people nearby fail to recognize and respond to the immediate symptoms of a stroke. Now medical experts agree that any bystander can recognize a stroke asking these three simple questions:
* ask the victim to smile
* ask them to raise both arms
* ask them to speak a simple sentence
If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers can identify facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers now urge the general public to learn these three questions. They presented their conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting February, 2004.
Widespread use of this protocol can result in prompt diagnosis and treatment of a stroke and prevent further brain damage.
