Subject: Niacin flush all day long

Q: My problem is I am having a horrible reaction to niacin, which has been going on for approx 9 months. I just came to the realization yesterday while sharing my symptoms with a friend, what I am allergic to. My flushes are so bad along with the prickly itching, that this occurs at least 20 to 30 times per day and will sometimes awaken me in the wee hours of the early morning, which is frightening. I really want to know how to flush this extra niacin out of my body? Thank-you.

A: I am sorry to hear of your reaction, but that means your blood and nerves are clean and healthy. Good sign!! Low cholesterol, also, I presume.

I would allow the niacin to eliminate naturally, as it will (or should) leave the body within 24 hours. Check your brand of niacin, though, to make sure you have not been taking a flush-free or timed-release form. These have been altered in the laboratory to NOT flush immediately but slowly dissolve over time. This is very toxic to the liver and can create a flushing effect all day long. Also, it is hard to know how much you actually need to take when you don't immediately flush. Most times, too much of the flush-free type is taken. The amount you need should be the mg slightly below a strong one-time flush. It sounds as if 50 mg may be enough for you, but you may not need more than what is found in whole foods or a quality B-Complex. I bet red wine makes you warm and flush, doesn't it?

If an altered form of niacin is not the case, and you are taking pure niacin, it should react within 30 to 45 minutes and be gone. So, stop taking it altogether and all should be fine. You can increase a good vitamin C for a couple of days to enhance elimination, but the niacin should naturally disappear. If you continue to flush without a niacin supplement, then email back as something else is going on. Hormones, maybe?

Subject: Hair analysis for drugs

Q: Hi, I have a complicated situation; I am currently going to court with my ex. However, I know that he is using drugs, but he keeps passing his drug tests, and I don't know how. I have spoken with a council to have him take a hair analysis. If I can prove that he is, and has been a drug user, hopefully he will lose all rights. What duration will the test cover? How far back can it track the drug use? I want to be able to prove that he's been doing this for a long time; hence, the reason I left him. But my lawyer says that the hair dies and that it will only show about the last 6 months. Is that true? I have to pay for the testing if the judge okays it, and it will cost me over 300 dollars if the judge okays it, so I was wondering if it is worth my while?

Thank you for your time.

A: A: Your lawyer is mistaken about the hair dying. The hair holds a permanent record of what is/has been in your system.

While our test is not set for drug use, there are labs that can do that. If you read through the hair analysis Web page, you will see more info regarding the amount of time covered in the test. It all depends on the length of his hair. Also, head hair and pubic hair grow at different rates making the time-period covered a bit different for each; pubic hair grows much slower.

The type of drugs he uses (some get out of the system much quicker than others) will determine which test is most appropriate. For example, marijuana can remain in a person's system (the break down products) for more than 30 days. It depends on metabolism, weight, and frequency of use.

I suggest you contact a probation office that performs regular drug testing to find a good lab in your area.

Subject: Aspartame and hypothyroidism

Q: I hope you got my letter about being healed of a hyperthyroid, and Graves' disease. Now I just found out that my sister's husband has a hypothyroid. Could you please tell me the symptoms of this, and what can help him get well? How bad can the symptoms get? Can it cause heart problems, cancer, or other serious problems? Thank you. Blessings.

A: Graves' disease and other forms of hyperthyroidism are reminiscent of my aspartame poisoning.

Hypothyroidism is also linked to aspartame and heavy metals. The thyroid is like a sponge. The thyroid is not only a signaling center for the rest of the body, but it captures toxins so they don't go deeper into the body. If he is consuming aspartame or other chemical sweeteners, he should stop. Almost certainly, he will see a reduction in symptoms.

Hypothyroidism can cause hormone problems, blood pressure, heart problems, emotional and libido problems, weight gain, lethargy, sleep issues...just to get started.

If he is consuming any chemical sweeteners, I suggest he stop immediately. In all likelihood, he will see a reduction in symptoms within a few weeks. Additionally, a hair analysis can show which metals are an issue for his system and creating health problems. Detoxing is important.

Subject: Severe aspartame addiction

Q: I have been drinking Diet Coke for the last 20 years. I wake up at 5:30 am and have a can in my mouth by 5:35. I know that this is extremely unhealthy, however I am addicted to this product. I can't wait till it enters my body. I have filled out the 92 questions and have around 88 of the symptoms. But still I continue on this path. I am on Effexor® for depression and jokingly tell my co-workers that I am donating my body to science to show the doctor's the effects of aspartame. Please help me get off this stuff. I know it is slowly destroying me. I am an intelligent woman and work in the school system. I constantly walk around with my Diet Coke. Even the students comment on my consumption. I will do whatever necessary to eliminate this substance from my body. Thanks. Many people find themselves in a similar situation...feeling as if they can never rid themselves of their addiction to Diet Coke.

A: Keep in mind, methanol is in aspartame, and methanol is potentially addictive and is very dangerous. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol

Consider how you might wean yourself from other addictions. Often, those of us addicted to substances are disheartened because of the way the addiction works on our minds. Once you can see the real dangers and the clear benefits of stopping your consumption of aspartame, you will find a way to beat this.

For now, I recommend you sip occasionally on a real coke. Drink lots of water. Try green tea for the caffeine and the metabolism boosters. Eat a natural, whole foods diet with several small meals a day. As you cleanse your body, you'll find less need for the diet coke. Additionally, the increase in health will help you resist the urge, again.

Good luck to you. I know this isn't easy.

Subject: My detox vitamins

Q: I would like some information on the supplements before I order, like quantities, price, etc. Is there a site I could go to that talks about them and gives me options? Although I want to do a healthy thing for myself, I would like to know more about the supplements, their affects, and the costs. I don't want to commit to an order that I can't monetarily afford. I am interested in the following:

French Green Clay, Detox, Vitamin-C, B-Complex, Niacin, Digestive Enzyme, and Multi-Vitamin, Trace Mineral Complex, Iodine from liquid kelp, selenium (200 mcg), lithium, Yeast Ex, and acidophilus.

What can you tell me about these products?

A: Our vitamins Web page is still under construction, as we have just recently added the vitamins to our site. We are in transition, so it may be another week or so before we have worked out all the bugs.

I do not push my vitamin line. This is such an important program; I just want to make sure that the detox supplements, no matter where they are bought or what brand, are strong enough to truly clean toxins and heavy metals from the body. I created some of the supplements, myself, and personally use them. These are my personal choices.

NOW has a good product line of vitamins. Mega Food and Juice Plus are also good. There are some good products out there, and there are some junk products out there.

You can purchase World Organics Liquid kelp from your local health food store. NOW has good selenium. Jarrow has a good acidophilus. We also have our own acidophilus. Nature's sunshine has a good Caprylic Acid to replace the Yeast Ex, which we have in our offices.

If you have further questions or concerns, please let me know. You can order detox vitamins from our offices by either visiting our vitamin page or by emailing our offices.

Subject: Swing with niacin

Q: I know you have answered a ton of questions about flushing for me but I still am not 100% sure about it. When I feel a flush sometimes it isn't until an hour later after I have taken the niacin. Does this mean I should up my intake until it is right away or what? Sorry to bug you about this, but it just seems to be the thing I have the most difficulty getting a grasp on out of everything. Thanks in advance!!!!

A: That's what I'm here for - to help. Remember what I wrote about detoxing in layers? Like peeling the layers off an onion, one layer at a time? Well, toxins deposit in layers, and you remove them in the reverse order they deposited, one layer at a time. This is what creates the burn sometimes, and sometimes no burn. It depends upon the layers of removal. When toxins are lower than your niacin mg intake, then you'll feel a burn. But, if your toxins are layered in a somewhat impenetratable layer, then you won't flush at a lower dose of niacin. You need to charge the niacin up, so to speak, so it can break through the layer. Once it's broken through, you'll feel the flush and can decrease the mg. So, it's a swing-thing - niacin demands may go up and down dependent on the layers of toxins it is eating through.

I hope this helps.
