Walnuts are drugs, according to the FDA. Well then, these are the drugs I like!!!
Michael Tennant wrote a most interesting article for New American, July 21, 2011 about a battle between Diamond Foods and the FDA.
Diamond Foods apparently stated what they logically knew to be true - and what everyone knows to be true - about the health benefits of walnuts. Obviously, the FDA didn't approve of this logic, and sent the company a letter stating that Diamond's walnut products are "drugs", and cannot be legally marketed in the United States without an approved drug application. The FDA appears to have threatened Diamond with "seizure" of their walnuts if they failed to comply to their directives.
I'm serious!
Don't FDA admins watch the squirrels in their backyard? Don't FDA officers keep up with the studies from the University of California (UC) in Davis showing that lab mice fed walnuts had a slow down in the growth of tumors? I guess it slipped passed the FDA that after 18 weeks of being fed a walnut-rich diet, the mice had tumors half the size of tumors in the mice fed a standard diet.
The UC Davis researchers also discovered that the walnut-fed mice had lower LDL cholesterol, and noted a difference in the livers of the test rats that metabolized the walnuts as opposed to a soybean oil diet. Some researchers believe that they can prove walnuts can prevent some tumors from ever forming. When this study is complete, make sure someone sends the results to the FDA.
Why do we need more research to prove what nature has already shown us, anyway? Backyard birds and other cute little animals eat walnuts and they do not have "tumors." They don't need a prescription, well, not yet.
This study was conducted with the USDA Western Regional Research Center and was funded by the California Walnut Board. The study was published in the British Journal of Nutrition, so I wonder if this is part of the FDA's problem - they aren't on top of "current US news" published across the pond! Shame on you, FDA! You can do better than this.
