February's Healthy Recipe for your outdoor birds: Homemade Protein Treat
Rain, sleet, snow or sunshine, outdoor birds always come out to eat. This is a very simple way to supply fresh treats providing protein from nuts and seeds - especially in the cold, winter months.
Homemade Protein Treat
Ingredients:
1 bag natural birdseed of choice
1 jar all-natural peanut butter, or nut butter of choice
1 empty plastic milk or water jug
Twine or ribbon
Instructions:
Cut a heart shape from the flat surface of a clean and empty gallon milk or water jug. Using a hole-punch, carefully make a hole at the top of the heart.
Slather organic peanut butter on one side of the plastic.
Put birdseed into a dish, and place the peanut butter heart facedown in the birdseed. Press down until the peanut butter is covered with seed.
Taking care to not dislodge the finished side, use a knife or spoon to spread peanut butter on the other side of the heart, and gently pat down in the birdseed until covered.
Loop a ribbon or twine through the hole at the top and secure with a double knot.
Hang your feeder from a tree and watch as your feathered friends enjoy their heart-shaped treat.
