Aspartame Approval History

It's been thirty years since aspartame first came on the market as NutraSweet/Equal®. Researchers warned us as early as the 1960s that this artificial sugar substitute was harmful to human health, but their warnings never reached the consumer.

Today, new scientific research continues to come forward with the hope that the findings that aspartame causes cancer, memory loss, birth defects, leukemia, and lymphoma will finally break through to public awareness. The question most people ask is "why is aspartame still on the market if the FDA insists that it is safe?" Aspartame's history reveals the facts that answer this question, and that involves a complex and alarming chronicle of events.
