Healthy Feedback

Dear Dr. Janet,

Happy New Year! After reading your wonderful stories that you share, I felt I had to write and tell you about my wife, Theresa. In and around June 2004, she began having pains in her body that our doctor said where most likely arthritis. He sent us to a rheumatologist for tests, and he confirmed that she did have arthritis and should quit work and just try to make herself feel better. On a return visit, my wife made a reference to getting a second opinion, and the doctor told her that if she didn't believe him, maybe she should get a second opinion.

After talking to our family doctor about this, he got us an appointment at UC San Francisco in Jan. 2005. We were glad to go because we thought we could get a real answer from the first doctor's visit. Well, this doctor told her that she did not have arthritis, yet he did not know what was wrong with her. After 3 more visits, they told us that sometimes symptoms show up, but the medical tests can't confirm anything is wrong. They also said that it might take a few years to finally show positive for arthritis. Discouraged and in a lot of pain, we went home with no answers.

After months of increasing pain, a friend sent us an article on the effects aspartame has on the human body. By the end of June 2005, Theresa had stopped using anything with aspartame, and on the 4th of July she was playing volleyball at a 4th party.

I believe that this letter and Theresa's faith brought us to this happy ending, although it took until about November 2005 for her to fully recover, she now is back at work and completely normal again, now 3 years later. And, no arthritis!

May this story help begin a new year for those like Theresa. Don't give up - keep looking for a way to heal, even if it excludes your doctor's recommendations!
